The course looks at concepts and perspectives that elucidate the blue economy. It will take students through the contemporary opportunities that the blue economy offers and also highlights the threats in the blue economy of the African coast. The course will also focus on value chain issues, pricing and standardization, market access and competition to economic activities.
Objective
The aim of this course is to:
- provide a meta-analysis of geographically sensitive perspective of the blue economy,
- discusses the contemporary opportunities and threats that the blue economy offers in Africa, and design mitigating strategies for those threats along the Africa coasts, and
- examine value chain issues and analyse the competitive environment in the marine related economic activities.
Content
This course seeks to discuss emerging issues that affect the blue economy in Africa. The module will focus on emerging concepts in the blue economy, contemporary opportunities and threats, marine and coastal pollution, ocean monitoring and surveillance and economics of marine businesses. In addition, discussion will be extended to existing European Commission and United Nations guidelines on blue economy businesses.
Mode of Delivery
The mode of delivery of the course would take the form of face-to-face lectures, online lectures, seminars, class presentations, hands-on exercises and case studies.
