THE 3RD ANNUAL WORKSHOP OF THE US-WEST AFRICA COASTAL RESILIENCE RESEARCH CONSORTIUM (CRRC), AUGUST 9-11, 2023 – UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST, GHANA

The US-West Africa Atlantic Coastal Resilience Research Consortium (CRRC) brings together a diverse and interdisciplinary group of researchers from multiple US institutions in collaboration with several leading institutions and agencies from coastal countries in West Africa to develop and implement a joint research plan to better understand the processes that link and impact both Atlantic coastlines (e.g., intense storms, hurricane activities, sea level rise, mangrove ecosystem health drivers, oceanography and fisheries, etc.). A key goal of the CRRC is to engage in collaborative scientific research that provides policy-relevant recommendations and innovative solutions for building long-lasting resilience of the coast and coastal communities. In this regard, the consortium holds annual workshops to map out plans for achieving its objectives. Following on the heels of very successful workshops in 2020 and 2022, the consortium is organizing its 3rd Annual CRRC regional coastal resilience workshop from August 9th to 11th, 2023. This three-day workshop will be hosted by the University of Cape Coast. The workshop is entitled:

“Harnessing the Blue Economy: Imperatives and Opportunities for Coastal Resiliency in West Africa”

The following thematic areas will be explored:

1.       Blue economy Financing

2.       Taking Better Fisheries Statistics

3.       Circular Economy in Coastal Ecosystems

4.       Coastal Resiliency

5.       Marine Pollution

6.       Multitrophic Integrated Mariculture

7.       Seabed Mining

8.       Marine Security

The workshop will focus on solutions and tools for building coastal resilience in West (and Central) Africa, especially around the theme of the Blue Economy. The Workshop will bring together more than 40 participants, and it is open to practitioners, researchers, and graduate students with expertise in environmental economics, climate, and environmental science; fisheries and marine science; sociology and remote sensing from the United States and West African Institutions. We encourage researchers and students to submit abstracts in the highlighted thematic areas.
