The Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience received a number of applications for the academic programmes of the 2022/2023 school year. Twenty-two of these applicants were successful and selected into MPhil and PhD programmes; Mphil Integrated Coastal Zone Management, PhD Integrated Coastal Zone Management, MPhil Blue Economy, PhD Blue Economy.

Out of the twenty-two students, 9 are regional students, and to make life as World Bank ACECoR scholars seemless and easy, there was the need to orient them into the system.
The orientation event took place at the ACECoR lecture halls on the 16th of January 2023, with a welcomed address from the director, Prof Denis Worlanyo Aheto. All students introduced themselves indicating their countries, program of study and a little background. All staff and faculty present also followed suit with their introductions as well. An overview was given for each of the academic programmes by the leadership of the host departments.

The students were introduced to the academic modules of their respective programmes by the academic coordinator, Dr. Isaac Okyere, with a discussion on the academic calendar and delivery modes. They were also informed about the mandatory internships as part of their scholarship terms of agreement and educated on how to apply and undergo the internships.

The centre in partnership with the University of Rhode Island offers dual degrees to interested and qualifying students. The orientation was an opportunity for Dr. Noble Asare the Laison Officer, to introduce the freshmen to this very interesting offer. They were taken through the requirements and mode of application. The students were further taken through the research thematic areas that their research is required to address. They are (a) Coastal Geomorphology and Engineering, (b) Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation, (c) Blue Economy, Governance, and Social Resilience, (d) Disaster Risk Management and Migration, and (e) Ecosystems and Biodiversity.

The students, staff, and faculty discussed at length, funding, grants stipends, welfare, and a host of other important issues relevant to their stay on campus. The students were very excited to be accepted into ACECoR and promised to make the best out of the opportunity
