The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) has announced the selection of 10 projects for the Fiscal Year 2024 Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) program, which is a collaboration between JST, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). Supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), SATREPS aims to promote international joint research using advanced science and technology from Japan, combined with Official Development Assistance (ODA), to address global issues and foster innovations.
Among the 10 selected projects, ACECoR (Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience) has secured a project titled "The Project for Development of Integrated Sediment and Environmental Management Towards Sustainable Conservation, Disaster Risk Reduction, and Livelihood Improvements in Coastal Areas (DISEM)" in collaboration with the Department of Civil Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo. The project, which is scheduled to run from 2025 to 2029, focuses on developing integrated approaches to sediment and environmental management in coastal areas of Ghana. It aims to address challenges such as coastal erosion, flooding, and environmental degradation, which pose significant risks to the livelihoods of coastal communities. By implementing sustainable conservation measures and disaster risk reduction strategies, the project will improve the resilience of coastal areas and enhance the livelihoods of the local population.
To formalize this collaboration, minutes of meeting have been signed between JICA, JST, ACECoR, and several Ghanaian institutions, agreeing on the implementation of the DISEM project. This agreement solidifies the commitment of the involved parties to work together towards achieving the project’s goals, ensuring the sustainable management of Ghana’s coastal resources while improving the living conditions of the affected communities.
