Advancing Collaborative Fisheries Governance in Ghana
Corpo

Strengthening fisheries governance in Ghana requires more than policy discussions, it demands collaboration, shared vision, and active participation from those at the heart of the sector.

As part of preparations toward the Fisheries Regulation Programme, scheduled to run from April to December 2026, the Centre for Coastal Management - ACECoR at the University of Cape Coast convened a strategic partners meeting in collaboration with Blue Ventures, bringing together key stakeholders committed to sustainable fisheries management in Ghana.

The meeting convened a cross-section of influential institutional actors including the Global Fisheries and Resilience Action (GFRA), the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council (CNCFC), the Central and Western Fishmongers Improvement Association, and the Canoe and Fishing Gear Owners Association of Ghana (CaFGOAG). This reflects a deepening alignment among key players toward strengthening fisheries governance and advancing sustainable resource management in Ghana.

The discussions that were had revolved around these four objectives;

  • Aligning partner activities and defining clear roles under the Fisheries Regulation Programme
  • Refining timelines to ensure coherence and feasibility for the April–December implementation period
  • Deliberating on implementation strategies and coordination mechanisms for fisheries regulations
  • Setting clear, measurable objectives to guide impactful delivery within Ghana’s fisheries sector

A central mandate of this initiative is to contribute substantively to the preparation of fisheries regulations, with a strong emphasis on active participation of local fishing communities in the regulatory development and implementation process. This participatory approach is intended to promote inclusivity and sustainability in fisheries management.

This collaboration highlights ACECoR’s ongoing role in bridging research, policy, and practice, while reinforcing partnerships that advance evidence-based fisheries governance and community-centered resource management.

Together, we move closer to a more resilient and sustainable fisheries sector in Ghana.
