In a dynamic collaboration between the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR), the Centre for Coastal Management (CCM), the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (DFAS), the Department of Applied Economics and the Ocean Country Partnership Program (OCPP), an informative student orientation session recently unfolded. This event, which took place on the 15th of January 2024, was attended by both seasoned resource persons, and the newly admitted cohort of students. The stage was set for an enriching academic journey focused on coastal resilience and sustainability.

The session commenced with a warm welcome from the Director of ACECoR, Prof. Denis W. Aheto, emphasizing the significance of the ACECoR programs in fostering expertise in coastal ecosystems. The collaborative effort between ACECoR, CCM, and DFAS underscored the interdisciplinary approach essential for addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by coastal regions.

Resource persons, comprising experienced faculty members, staff and experts in various areas, shared their insights into the diverse facets of the program. From cutting-edge research initiatives to hands-on field experiences, the students were introduced to the breadth of opportunities awaiting them.

The Academic Coordinator – Dr. Isaac Okyere, also played a pivotal role in outlining the curriculum, offering a comprehensive overview of the courses and practical training modules that form the backbone of the program. This integration of academic excellence and real-world application set the tone for a holistic learning experience. The students were also schooled on various internship opportunities awaiting them after their first year of studies.

Interactive sessions allowed students to engage directly with faculty members, creating an open dialogue that extended beyond the formal presentations. The diverse backgrounds of the student cohort added to the vibrancy of discussions, reflecting the international scope of ACECoR's influence.

In addition to academic pursuits, the orientation delved into the numerous extracurricular activities and community engagement initiatives facilitated by ACECoR. The students were also taken on tour see the various facilities, resources and offices on campus which will be essential to their stay. Emphasis was placed on the importance of not only acquiring knowledge but also contributing to the sustainable development and resilience of coastal areas.

The event concluded with a sense of enthusiasm and anticipation as students familiarized themselves with the resources and support systems available at ACECoR. Networking opportunities were abundant, with both students and staff recognizing the collaborative nature of the program and the potential for impactful research partnerships.

The ACECoR student orientation session stands as a testament to the commitment of the Centre to nurturing the next generation of coastal stewards. As these students embark on their academic journey, they carry with them the torch of knowledge and a collective determination to safeguard our coastal environments for generations to come.
