The module covers small scale and large scale (industrial) coastal-marine capture fisheries and aquaculture. Emphasis is placed on the characteristics, scale of operation, operational inputs and costs, production, market systems and profitability. Livelihoods and business opportunities along the fisheries and aquaculture value chains, as well as challenges in the sector including economic and environmental sustainability are discussed.
Objective
This course exposes students to small-scale fisheries, industrial fisheries and coastal aquaculture, and the opportunities for businesses, livelihoods and sustainability within the context of the blue economy. At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- describe coastal-marine fisheries and explain the need for their economic and environmental sustainability; and
- identify livelihood and business opportunities in coastal aquaculture and within the fisheries value chain.
