This module aims to provide an understanding of the whole complexity of climate change as an issue in coastal communities, by piecing together the science, impacts, economics, and policy solutions. It generally emphasises mitigation and adaptation measures for minimizing the impacts of climate change in coastal communities and also assesses the vulnerability of communities and their capacity for dealing with the effects of climate change. The module guides students to evaluate trends in the indicators of climate change and their possible effects on coastal communities and facilities. Students are engaged in developing skills and tools for communicating climate change issues. Carbon accounting, carbon footprint assessment as well as carbon reduction strategies will also be treated. A short project on climate change issues will be undertaken by students and report submitted at the end of the module.
