Ernest Kofi Amankwa Afrifa, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Ghana, obtained his Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Agriculture and a Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast in 1998, an MSc degree in Environmental and Resource Management from the Brandenburg University of Technology, Cottbus, Germany in 2004 and an MBA in Finance from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom, in 2008. He is a member of the University of Cape Coast Campus Security and Safety Committee, the Environmental and Social Safeguards Officer for the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR), UCC and the Hall Master of one of the biggest Halls of Residence in the University, Valco Hall. Ernest lectures several courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels including health, safety and environmental management, basic soil science, data collection, analysis and resolution of environmental problems, environmental policy, environmental economics and environmental pollution and impact assessment. His special interests are in water, sediment and fish quality assessment, municipal waste management, occupational safety and environmental management systems. Currently, his research activities evolve around mycorrhizae assessment of decommissioned tailings storage facilities, impacts of tailings storage facilities on groundwater, profiling of mine pitwater quality, vertical attenuation of heavy metals in sediment cores as well as managing health, safety and the environment in workplaces. He is an astute environmental and safety consultant who has consulted widely for some of the reputable mining and oil and gas companies in Ghana, and has been associated with over thirty environmental impact assessment studies in Ghana. Ernest has 18 peer-reviewed publications and over 60 technical/consultancy reports to his credit and presently supervising two MPhil students in the Department of Environmental Science, U.C.C. He is passionate about the holistic development of the individual and thus mentors students to be assertive, meticulous and independently-minded as they chart career paths in academia. He is a strong advocate for attitudinal change and adoption of eco-centric tendencies as a means of solving the numerous environmental challenges confronting his generation.
