Ernest Kofi Amankwa Afrifa is an Associate Professor at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Ghana. He obtained his Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Agriculture and a Diploma in Education from UCC in 1998, an MSc in Environmental and Resource Management from the Brandenburg University of Technology, Cottbus, Germany, in 2004, an MBA in Finance from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom, in 2008, and a PhD from UCC. He is currently the Environmental and Social Safeguards Officer for the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) at UCC, and is also a member of the team of experts tasked by the G20 Land Initiative of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) to design a global course on sustainable land restoration to be taught in 1,000 universities worldwide. He is a former member of the University’s Campus Security and Safety Committee. Ernest lectures several courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, with special interests in water, sediment and fish quality assessment, municipal waste management, occupational safety, and environmental management systems. His current research activities focus on mycorrhizae assessment of decommissioned tailings storage facilities, the impacts of tailings storage facilities on groundwater, profiling of mine pit water quality, vertical attenuation of heavy metals in sediment cores, and the management of health, safety, and the environment in workplaces. An astute environmental and safety consultant, Ernest has worked extensively with reputable mining and oil and gas companies in Ghana and has been involved in more than thirty environmental impact assessment studies. He has over thirty peer-reviewed publications and more than sixty technical and consultancy reports to his credit. Passionate about the holistic development of the individual, Ernest mentors students to be assertive, meticulous, and independently minded as they chart their career paths in academia. He is a strong advocate for attitudinal change and the adoption of eco-centric approaches as a means of addressing the numerous environmental challenges facing his generation.
