I am Chisomo Jim Phiri from Zambia, Southern Africa. I am excited about this opportunity of a lifetime ACECoR has given me to pursue an MPhil in Integrated Coastal Zone Management at the prestigious University of Cape Coast in Ghana. Having obtained my Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries and Aquaculture from the Copperbelt University in Zambia in 2015 and worked in the Fisheries sector of Zambia for over five years, I was keen to find a study opportunity that would broaden my understanding of aquatic ecosystems and build my capacity to contribute to the global quest to sustain, improve and restore ecosystems. 2021 to 2030 being the United Nations’ Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, I found the ICZM program particularly attractive as it seeks to train “manpower to address the challenges within the coastal sector with emphasis on the principles and practice of integrated coastal management for sustainable development”. I am very optimistic that ACECoR and UCC will furnish me with the relevant interdisciplinary knowledge, skills and competencies I need for a world-class career that aims at improving the health of the coastal zone and ultimately sustaining livelihoods of people dependent on these resources.
