POST DOCTORAL AND PHD RESEARCHER POSITIONS ON THE PROJECT FOR DEVELOPMENT OF INTEGRATED SEDIMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE CONSERVATION, DISASTER RISK REDUCTION, AND LIVELIHOOD IMPROVEMENTS IN COASTAL AREAS IN GHANA
Project description
Ghana’s coast faces several challenges, among which coastal erosion, coastal flooding, and overall insufficient environmental governance are critical. These challenges degrade the coast, endanger ecosystems, put human livelihoods and well-being at risk, undermine economic potential, and increase vulnerability to natural disasters. Lack of various coastal data including sediment supply from the river makes it difficult to conduct integrated sediment management for coastal protection and conservations. Another challenge in coastal management is in its chronic features, which may lead to underestimation of the merit of the various coastal conservation and protection measures.
To overcome these challenges for promotion of integrated sediment and environmental management, this project aims to develop a system to design and plan various measures for coastal protection and integrated sediment management and to evaluate their benefits including the long-term positive spiral of coastal protection, disaster prevention and mitigation, improvements of environment and livelihood. To this end, this project develops Data Integration and Analysis System for Coastal Protection and Conservation, which includes but no limited to: (i) a data collection and monitoring system; (ii) data base, (iii) system for data analysis and predictions of various aspects such as: sediment budget; coastal topography change; coastal hazard; water qualities; and socioeconomic benefits of various measures. Developed system will be implemented in ACECoR and case studies will be conducted toward practical sustainable usages of the developed system.
