Daniel Aja of ACECoR Receives Aya Data Residency Award
Body

From the 3rd – 9th September 2023, the largest artificial intelligence and machine learning conference in Africa, Deep Learning Indaba, was held in the University of Ghana, with the theme, “Y3b3tumi (We can)”. This conference is organized annually to bring together individuals from the African Machine Learning and AI Community with the mission to strengthen African AI.

Dr. Daniel Aja, an alumnus of the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience, University of Cape Coast (ACECoR,UCC) participated in this year’s edition and presented on the PhD thesis he undertook at the centre, “Nonparametric assessment of Mangrove ecosystem in the context of coastal resilience in Ghana”. In his research, he explored the use of machine learning algorithm in improving the accuracy of Mangrove assessment in Ghana.

His research was novel, innovative, unique and contributed to solving a relevant issue of national interest. For this reason, he was awarded an Aya Data Residency Award out of the over 800 research papers submitted by participants. The award presents him with a 6-week residency opportunity to collaborate on an innovative AgriTech project. He will be aided by the annotation team and geospatial AI experts to tackle above ground carbon biomass estimation using remote sensing. He will also work on vertically integrating a machine learning solution to solve pressing climate change challenges from on-site data acquisition to deploying machine learning model and many other exciting packages.

Congratulations, Dr. Daniel Aja on this great feat!
