Short Training Course on Coastal Management through the Integrated Sediment Management Approach
To address environmental challenges in coastal areas, particularly coastal erosion, it is important to understand the challenges from a comprehensive perspective, based on understanding the dynamics of sediment transport in the surrounding environment.
This short-term training course, jointly organized by the Infrastructure Development Institute – Japan (IDI) & Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) and supported by the World Bank will help researchers, practitioners and students in the West African region enhance their ability to address coastal environmental challenges with an integrated sediment management perspective, with an understanding of the environmental systems of the coastal areas
Objectives
Participants are expected to acquire basic knowledge and skills on:
- Understanding coastal erosion and other environmental issues in the coastal areas from the perspective of integrated sediment management;
- Best practices on sediment management from Japan, West African Countries, and other parts of the world; and
- Incorporating perspectives of integrated sediment management into research and practices and finding doable solutions.
Target
Researchers, government staffers, and students from West African countries who are working on issues related to coastal management, in particular, coastal erosion.
Course Features
Experienced Lecturers from Japan (Academia, private sector, government) with a coastal engineering background and ACECoR will provide lectures, guidance, and advice based on knowledge and experience in coastal erosion control and integrated sediment management in Japan and other parts of the world.
Participants will acquire basic knowledge through classroom and on-site lectures and discussions. Participants will also acquire skills through analysis of issues and solutions to their problems.
