The module has been developed to explore marine bio-resources and provide insights into their economic potential. It further seeks to provide an understanding of how new products and processes can help address the global challenges of food, energy and health as well as solutions for sustainable management of the marine environment.
Objective
This course exposes students to coastal-marine resources including algae and invertebrates of biotechnological importance and provides the skills for harnessing products out of these resources. At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- identify coastal-marine resources of biotechnological importance and their usefulness within the context of blue economy
- process coastal marine resources such as algae and invertebrates into bio-products with important economic, food, health, energy, etc.
Content
The course explores marine bio-resources and provides insights on its economic potential. It will further provide the knowledge and skill on harnessing new coastal-marine bio-products to address the global challenges of food, energy and health as well as solutions for a sustainable management of the marine environment. Biotechnological applications to extracting, processing and making products out of algae, invertebrates and other marine resources will be covered.
Mode of Delivery
The course will be delivered through face to face and online lectures, field trips, case studies, individual assignments and group presentations.
