Introduction

Recognizing that Coastal Degradation is a complex and multifaceted problem, the overall research strategy for the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) will be a systems-based approach where smaller research projects that are multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary are being developed to eventually feed into a broad goal of addressing the challenge of Coastal Degradation. The main aim of the research plan of ACECoR is to provide data and information to support development of policies to address coastal degradation. The broad research needs that the Centre will seek to address have been categorized into five main thematic areas as follows: (a) Coastal Geomorphology and Engineering, (b) Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation, (c) Blue economy, Governance and Social Resilience, (d) Disaster Risk Management and Migration and (e) Ecosystems and Biodiversity. The thematic areas have been described into details.
