This course involves hands-on training with relevant software for experimental and sampling designs, data analysis, ecological modeling, geographic information systems and remote sensing (GIS/RS). Students will be provided with skills in qualitative and quantitative data analysis. In qualitative analysis, students will be taught content analysis using manual techniques and through the use of Nvivo software. Students will also learn to use statistical software packages such as SPSS, STATA and R to analyse quantitative data through hypothesis testing, linear models and generalized linear models as well as drawing inferences from statistical data. They will acquire skills in ecological modeling and spatial analysis through GIS/RS. Skills such as rapid appraisal methods of assessment of coastal environments (RACE) would be acquired using primary and secondary data. They will be introduced to environmental assessment techniques and various economic valuation methods as well as training in the use of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS), techniques for coastal management and planning. Students will be expected to undertake some practical work, which applies the classroom knowledge to field.
