This course will expose students to systems, theories and resilience thinking. This would be related to the Sustainable Development Goals. The course will take students through the various forms of alternative and supplementary livelihood activities and socio-economic outcomes in coastal communities taking a gendered approach.
Objective
This course seeks to:
- expose students to theories and models of social resilience and sustainable development;
- identify ways of promoting women and the marginalised groups in coastal communities;
- develop social resilience tools; and
- equip students to apply the skills obtained for building the capacity of coastal communities in alternative livelihood activities.
Content
In this course, gendered perspectives of social resilience and sustainable development in coastal communities will be covered. Issues of equal rights to blue economy resources, gender disparities in wages/income and gender participation in blue economy decision making will be addressed. Students will be exposed to the system, theory and gender dynamics of resilience thinking; community risk and vulnerability assessment; building social resilience in coastal communities; alternative and supplementary livelihood activities and Indigenous resilience techniques.
Mode of Delivery
The course will be delivered through lectures, case analysis, presentations, practical assignments and fieldwork. Assessment will be conducted through presentations, case studies, practical assignments and exams.
