This module deals with methodological issues in Coastal Management from the perspective of social science research. The module is intended to equip students with the theoretical and philosophical knowledge, which subsequently form the basis for making key methodological decisions in social research. Specific issues will include the ontological and epistemological basis for understanding social reality while enhancing students’ understanding of the quantitative-qualitative debate. Other key areas will include proposal writing, designing research instruments (both quantitative and qualitative), sampling methods and the place of value in social research.
