We are excited to announce a call for stories/publication from innovative journalists who can contribute compelling stories to raise awareness and address the negative impacts of foreign-owned distant water fishing vessels (DWFVs) in the Gulf of Guinea and Mauritanian waters.
This Call for Publication is a key component of the Promoting Local Capacity to Address the Destabilising Impacts of Foreign Fishing Vessels in the Gulf of Guinea and Mauritania project, implemented by the Centre for Maritime Law and Security Africa (CEMLAWS Africa) and Centre for Coastal Management (CCM), University of Cape Coast. The project aims to empower coastal communities and local fishing industries to counter the destabilizing effects of DWFVs in the region. This Call for Publication directly addresses the project’s first objective: media reporting, increasing civil society organization (CSO) monitoring, and public awareness of the negative impacts of DWFVs.
We invite submissions that shed light on the impacts of DWFVs and IUU fishing on coastal communities, the environment, and national economies. We are particularly interested in stories that highlight the challenges faced by local fishing communities, the role of CSOs in monitoring and advocating for sustainable fishing practices, and the need for greater transparency and accountability in the distant water fishing governance sector. By amplifying these voices, we aim to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and ultimately contribute to a more sustainable and equitable management of marine resources in the Gulf of Guinea and Mauritania.
