A five-day intensive training program on "GIS and Remote Sensing Applications in Coastal Management" took place from November 25 to 29, 2024, bringing together participants from diverse institutions across Ghana. These included the Ghana Hydrological Agency, various district and municipal assemblies, the Development Action Association, the Development Institute, Ghana Wildlife and Forestry Commission, and the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.
The workshop, organized as part of the partnership between the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) and the West Africa Coastal Areas (WACA) program, aimed to enhance technical skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing for effective coastal management.
Participants engaged in both theoretical and practical modules, covering topics such as GIS fundamentals, spatial analysis, coordinate systems, and drone mapping technologies. The training also emphasized hands-on exercises using QGIS and drone data to address real-world coastal management challenges. Group activities, including map creation and geospatial analysis, fostered collaborative learning and application.
Facilitators, including experienced resource persons like Prof. Denis Aheto and Dr. Richard Adade, ensured a blend of academic and practical insights. The program concluded with a closing ceremony, where participants were awarded certificates for their active participation.
This initiative reflects ACECoR and WACA's commitment to building capacity for sustainable coastal zone management and resilience across West Africa.
