Webinar Information
The world's oceans are essential to the very existence of mankind. However, increasing global population and its resonating repercussions on the environment has not spared our oceans. Vast natural resources like the ocean are often taken for granted with the tendency to renege on our collective responsibility of protection and sustainable use, for future generations. As such, the World Oceans Day, 8th June, has been set aside by the United Nations to honour, help protect, and conserve the ocean. The theme for this year's celebration is 'Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean'. The theme is relevant because as the challenges to the ocean continue to grow, so does the need for novel solutions and the people driving them. There are many efforts on the global scale, comprising of myriad local actions within communities across the world. In Ghana, the Centre for Coastal Management (CCM) and the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (DFAS) at the University of Cape Coast are charting the path, making significant strides in building capacity relevant to sustaining our oceans. In the national to regional context, the two departments are training higher level manpower critical to the transformation of the coasts and oceans of Africa.
As the World Bank and Africa Union Centres of Excellence respectively, CCM-ACECoR and DFAS are jointly presenting a webinar on the topic "Innovations in Higher Education towards Sustainable Oceans - Thinking Globally, Acting Locally" to mark the 2020 World Oceans Day celebrations. Presentations will highlight localised actions implemented in the past few years and the projected impacts on ocean sustainability in Africa, and globally. The webinar is intended to open up discussions between participants and presenters on the innovative drive for sustainable use and protection of our oceans, especially in Africa.
